Top Unique Places to Visit Cambodia

1. Angkor Wat (Angkor Archaeological Park)

Going from the town of Siem Reap, the Angkorian temples have such scale and majesty during construction, that Angkor Wat is rated as one of the world's must-see ancient sites.

Built from  802 to 1432, it was the largest city in the world during the medieval period and the vast power of the Khmer kings. When the city's wooden houses were encroached upon and then ravaged by the surrounding jungle, what remains today are only majestic temples.

The main highlights after Angkor Wat are Ta Prohm temple on tree roots (site used in movie Tomb Raider), Bayon Temple with 216 stone-carved faces, Angkor Thom and Preah Khan.

2. Phnom Penh

Cambodia's capital - a city of chaotic streets filled with motorbikes and the honking of cars can make you feel nervous at first glance.

It is also dotted with important historical sites that shed light on both the modern and ancient history of Cambodia.

The National Museum is home to a wide range of Khmer sculptures documenting the nation's history from pre-Angkorian times to the extraordinary majesty of the Angkorian gods.

The Royal Palace offers beautiful examples of traditional art, while the Tuol Sleng Museum and the Killing Fields at Choeung Ek talk about the horror and brutality suffered by the people of this country under the Khmer Red.

3. Koh Rong Samloem

Just off the southern coast of Cambodia is a series of beautiful but less-visited islands.

Compared to the currently very developed islands like Koh Samui and Phuket, Cambodia's islands are part of a tropical climate, the big resorts have yet to make a mark.

Of all the islands, Koh Rong Samloem is one of the most beautiful, with its long, sandy Saracen Bay, home to dozens of resorts offering guests a great vacation.

4. Siem Reap

Siem Reap is often considered by tourists as one of Cambodia's top places to visit due to its Angkor Archaeological Park, but the town itself offers much more than just majestic temples.

It is the country's major hub of activity, with travel packages on offer ranging from bike trips around the lush countryside just outside of town to cooking tours in Cambodia.

Be sure to visit the Angkor National Museum to learn about its history. The exhibits here explore the cultural and artistic breadth of the Khmer empire.

For evening entertainment while in town, don't miss Phare The Cambodia Circus. This internationally renowned circus and social enterprise offers dazzling shows where performers combine theater, acrobatics and music.

5. Ratanakiri

This remote part of Cambodia with endless red dirt roads leading to ethnic minority villages, is an interesting spot for intrepid travelers.

For the adventurous, the province is one of the best places in Cambodia to hike through the jungle, from the spotted gibbons at Veun Sai-Siem Pang Sanctuary, where overnight trips include sleeping on hammocks and get up early to track white-cheeked gibbons, to hikes in Virachey National Park, home to elephants, tigers and sun bears.
