Tourist Arrivals in Southeast Asia Will Exceed 155 Million by 2022

The number of international tourists to the ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) region is predicted to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 4.72 percent from 129.2 million in 2018 to 155.4 million in 2022, according to analytics firm GlobalData.

In its most recent research, "Tourism Destination Market Insights: ASEAN," it determined that each country in the area had "great potential" for growth in the next three years as intra-ASEAN travel grows and tourists from further afield seek more adventurous vacations.

According to the survey, the expansion of low-cost carriers and an open-skies agreement have made intra-ASEAN travel more accessible. Due to proximity, simplified visa processes, and similar cultures, more of the ASEAN population is able to travel as significant businesses such as AirAsia expand their operations.

While the flood of tourists can be extremely beneficial to the countries in this region, over-tourism is a notable risk that governments and travel companies must be aware of, according to GlobalData.
