Singapore Experiences An Increase In Visitor Numbers

Singapore saw 1.5 million tourist visits in the first half of 2022, approximately 12 times as many as in 2021. (119,000). The first quarter of the year saw an anticipated SGD1.3 billion in tourism revenues (TR). Although Singapore's pre-pandemic IVA and TR figures are still much behind those of that city-state, STB predicts that tourist flows will increase to pre-Covid levels by the middle of the 2020s.

International arrivals of tourists (IVA)
The top five international visitor-producing markets in Singapore were Indonesia (282,000 visitors), India (219,000 visitors), Malaysia (139,000 visitors), Australia (125,000 visitors), and the Philippines (81,000 visitors), together accounting for 56% of the total IVA from January to June 2022.
The three countries with the biggest absolute year-over-year growth were Indonesia (+268,000, +196%), India (+204,000, +1344%), and Malaysia (+132,000, +2000%).
Notably, compared to the first half of 2019, the average duration of stay for guests more than doubled to over 7.1 days, up from 3.4 days.

Tourism income
Tourist receipts (TR) for the first quarter of 2022 totaled SGD1.3 billion, a 213 percent increase over the same time the previous year.

In Q1 2022, Indonesia, India, and China were the top three TR-generating markets, accounting for 32% of TR (excluding spending on Sightseeing Entertainment & Gaming, or SEG) (excluding SEG). Indonesia (+SGD95 million, +187%) and India (+SGD97 million, +376%) saw the biggest year-over-year absolute increase in TR among the top 10 TR markets (excluding SEG).

Major Components in TR
Growth was seen across all significant components, with shopping and lodging seeing the greatest year-over-year growth rates at 373 and 344 percent, respectively.

Looking Forward
Due to the unstable political and economic climate on a worldwide scale, as well as the changing state of the health system, tourism flows will see some challenges for the remainder of the year.
