Thanks to the reopening of foreign tourists and the restart of international flight lines, Vietnam has welcomed more than 1.44 million foreign arrivals in the first eight months of 2022, a 13.7-fold increase from a year earlier, data indicated.

The General Statistics Office (GSO) reported on August 29 that despite the COVID-19 pandemic, the figure nevertheless fell 87.3% from the same period in 2019, prior to the outbreak. 88.2% of the foreign arrivals to Vietnam arrived by air, an increase of 18.5 times, followed by 11.8% by road and 0.03% by sea.

Nearly 997,000 arrivals from Asian travelers made up the majority in the eight months, or 69.18% of all tourists. Notably, the number of Korean tourists increased 17.61 times year over year to become the largest source of foreign arrivals in Vietnam.

According to the GSO, there were 486,400 foreign visitors in August alone, up 38% from July and 52.3 times as many as in the previous year.

As a result of a robust tourism recovery, particularly domestic tourism, the eight-month tourism revenue is anticipated to be 15.4 trillion VND (657.4 million USD), which is 3.4 times more than in the same period last year. But the revenues are only equal to 47.7% of what they were during the same period in 2019.

In 2022, Vietnam hopes to welcome 5 million tourists from abroad.
